Auto Accident?

After the Colllision

After the Collision...

I’ve been involved in an auto accident – what are the next steps?
You should be seen by a doctor right away, even if you think the accident was minor and are not experiencing any pain or discomfort – you could suffer internal injuries that only a doctor can diagnose. At Integrated Wellness, we take great pride in providing the finest chiropractic wellness care to our patients.
Chiropractic care after an accident or fall, from minor collisions to major trauma, is the #1 way to help prevent loss of joint dysfunction in the spine. If you receive chiropractic care after an auto accident you can achieve lasting reduction of pain and prevent long term damage from this type of injury.
Who do I see after I’m injured?

Selecting a Doctor

It’s important to consult with a doctor after your accident – some injuries from a car crash are very subtle and never go away. These injuries should be diagnosed quickly by a doctor so you can receive appropriate treatment. If you are not seen soon after the injury, you might have permanent damage and pain. Timing is key – make an appointment with us sooner rather than later. This consultation is FREE for auto accident victims.

Symptoms & Injuries

Depending upon the direction, severity and force of the impact, personal injuries from a car accident can range from minor bumps and bruises, or sprains and strains, to major life threatening and permanently disabling problems. If you think you might have a fracture, internal injury or were struck unconscious, you should be taken to the emergency room and thoroughly checked out by a doctor. If you have any pain or numbness you might have a soft tissue injury – Integrated Wellness can diagnose these types of injuries and refer you to a specialist as-needed, including Orthopedic MD, Neurologist MD or for MRI, Radiology, or CT. Even if you don’t experience any symptoms, it is always good to consult with a doctor to diagnose any internal or underlying injury.

A few days after the accident, you may begin to notice sore achy muscles in your neck or back, sometimes accompanied by headaches that wake you when you are sleeping. Sometimes the headaches begin in the morning and last all day. Typically those symptoms are the result of sprains or strains to the muscle tissue in the area of the body that was injured in the accident. These injuries can cause subluxation and fixation that can damage nerve roots at the spine and this needs to be corrected by a Chiropractor to help prevent permanent damage.

Pain, numbness or tingling in the hand, fingers or down the leg into the foot or toes can indicate a possible permanent injury such as a herniated or ruptured intervertebral disk. Many times symptoms in the leg or hands are caused by an impingement of the nerve root by a fragment of the damaged disk. Early diagnosis and treatment are important.

Another common injury caused by a car crash is TMJ Dysfunction. The TM Joint is located where your jaw bone intersects with your skull on the side of your head. Symptoms include ringing or buzzing in the ears, jaw popping or clicking, jaw joint pain upon chewing, or temporal headaches. These symptoms can occur on one or both sides of the face.

If you are experiencing ANY pain as a result of your auto accident, schedule a FREE consultation to be seen by a doctor as soon as possible. Be sure to tell us if you have trouble sleeping, if you have anxiety while driving, if your wrists now hurt, if you have trouble performing your job or trouble doing normal daily activities.

What is Chiropractic?

History of Chiropractic

The history of chiropractic dates from 1895, when Daniel David Palmer of Iowa performed the first chiropractic adjustment on a partially deaf janitor, Harvey Lillard, who then mentioned a few days later to Palmer that his hearing seemed better. This led to Palmer opening a school of chiropractic two years later. The word "chiropractic" was coined from Greek root words by Reverend Samel Weed.

Early chiropractic bore similarities to osteopathy and was criticized as practicing medicine without a license. Those similarities resulted in many chiropractors, including D.D. Palmer, being jailed on such charges.

In 1906, D.D.'s son B. J. Palmer took control of the Palmer School of Chiropractic. B.J. began to accept the use of technology such as X-rays within chiropractic care. Dr. Solon Langworthy was the first to use the word "subluxation", and published the first book on chiropractic, called "Modernized Chiropractic" — "Special Philosophy — A Distinct System", in 1906.

Over the years, the profession has been intensely divided; one group, called "mixers", combining spinal adjustments with other treatments; the other, called "straights", relying solely on spinal adjustments. A conference sponsored by the National Institutes of Health in 1975 spurred the development of chiropractic research.

For most of its existence, chiropractic has battled with mainstream medicine, sustained by what was once labelled antiscientific and pseudoscientific ideas such as subluxation. The American Medical Association called chiropractic an "unscientific cult" and boycotted it until losing a 1987 antitrust case. By the mid 1990s there was a growing scholarly interest in chiropractic, which helped efforts to improve service quality and establish clinical guidelines such as recommending manual therapies for acute low back pain.

Why Chiropractic

As a treatment for acute neck and low back pain, chiropractic care is an undisputed winner. And although it is primarily used to relieve musculoskeletal pain, chiropractic has also been successfully used to treat a number of conditions.

What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a therapeutic modality that emphasizes diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of mechanical disorders of the spine. Misalignment of the spinal column can have pervasive adverse effects on tissues and organs throughout the body. The restoration of proper alignment through spinal adjustments and other treatments has positive effects on virtually all aspects of health.

How Does Chiropractic Therapy Work?

Chiropractic is based on the correction of subluxation of the spinal column. When the spine is even slightly out of alignment, it may impinge on the spinal nerves that branch out to the muscles and various organs. Bringing things back into their proper places through gentle manipulative techniques results in sometimes-miraculous outcomes.

A Typical Treatment

A typical chiropractic treatment might include heat and/or cold applied to the affected area and massage to relax the muscles. However, the centerpiece of chiropractic is the adjustment and manipulation, in which the chiropractor restores vertebral alignment, taking the stress off impinged nerves and overworked muscles. This can be done manually or gently with the Impulse Instrument Adjuster where there is no "twisting" or "popping" based on effectiveness and patient preference.

In addition to spinal manipulations, Chiropractors may utilize other modalities such as infrared therapy and spinal decompression. Infrared and photodynamic therapy involves the application of specific wavelengths of light to problem areas to help control pain, reduce inflammation, and enhance healing.

Spinal decompression is particularly effective in treating pain associated with herniated/bulging discs and degenerative disc disease in the low back and neck. The patient lies on a specialized decompression table while traction-distraction forces are applied to spinal structures in a precise and graduated manner, offset by cycles of partial relaxation. This “decompression effect” gently separates the vertebrae and lowers pressure inside targeted discs, causing retraction of the herniated or bulging disc, reduction of pressure on the nerve root, faster healing, and excellent clinical response.

Cost-Effective

Chiropractic is also cost-effective. A study in the Journal of Occupational Medicine compared medical and chiropractic treatment for low back pain and found that with
chiropractic, compensation costs were much less, treatment costs significantly lower, and days of compensation dramatically reduced. Overall, patients saw chiropractors three times more often than physicians but at less cost.
What Conditions Benefit From Chiropractic?

As a treatment for acute neck and low back pain, chiropractic care is an undisputed winner. And although it is primarily used to relieve musculoskeletal pain, chiropractic has also been successfully used to treat a number of conditions.

Success Stories

"Regular chiropractic visits have reduced my level of pain, increased my range of motion and have undoubtedly extended the life of my career . . . Thanks."  Greg J., D.D.S.

Dr. Poff is amazing!!  I have never had a more caring and thorough adjustment. I am confident to send my clients to him (and by the way, they rave about him)  because I know they will be taken care of.  I highly recommend him.   MaryLou H.

Dr. Poff has been treating me, my mom, dad and brother for over 15 years. The care and treatment given to us is well worth the 1 and 1/2 drive we take to see him. He is very helpful and caring. I have tried other chiropractors in my area, and no one compares to Dr. Poff and his staff.   Holly H, Temecula

Most gentle chiropractor I have been to!!!! I have been treated by Dr. Poff for several months and cannot thank him enough for turning my health around. I was in a few rear-ended car accidents over the years which really messed up my back and neck.  Before treating with Dr. Poff, I was unable to get up in the morning and could not work out like I used to due to pain and fatigue . I was very concerned about my health.

I have HMO and most chiros don't take HMO. A friend recommended Dr. Poff to me. I was surprised he took my HMO insurance. I was very impressed with how gentle and effective his adjustments were.  I am now back to feeling great and strong again.

I can now get up at 5 am and do my regular exercise and work all day long without feeling fatigue or pain. Besides being a great doctor, Dr. Poff is also a good person, very personable, down to earth, funny, friendly.  I feel he truly cares about helping people feel better and live a healthier life. He takes the time to talk with you and makes sure you feel better both physically and mentally.

For those who are not comfortable with manual adjustments, Dr. Poff also uses a hand tool to adjust. I have both types of adjustments and they both are effective  Dr. Poff's fee is surprising reasonable, given his location, years of experience and service.  GO SEE DR. POFF. He and his staff will take great care of you.   M.V.

I have been a patient of Dr. Poff's since he was an intern in Huntington Beach CA with Dr. Kit Carson. Since then I have traveled many miles, on many occasions to be treated by him, and only him. I have a history of back surgeries due to birth defects and accidents. He was able to help me postpone surgery many times by alleviating my pain. Over the years I have met patients in his office that were able to cancel their surgery and live a fulfilling life. After my back surgery in 1983 I had to convince my Neurosurgeon that I had to be adjusted by Dr. Poff in order to recover, (yeah, that went well!) after seeing the improvement, my surgeon was very impressed and allowed ongoing treatment. I took my children to him for sports injuries and accidents. I will always recommend him to anyone, young or old, needing treatment. Distance should not stand in the way of excellent treatment. (Doug, we need you here in Palm Springs/Palm Desert! Some of these people shouldn't be driving… that far.) In my opinion, based on years of personal experience, Dr. Poff is the very best chiropractor available anywhere; he is honest about your treatment plan and helps you understand your condition and ailments. Treat yourself to the very best, and go see him! I will be seeing him soon at the new facility, at which time I will rate it, but knowing Dr. Poff… It is top notch!    Joy D.

I have not been to the new facility yet (so I did not rate its accessibility or facility), but I can tell you that Dr. Poff is definitely the best Chiropractor I have ever encountered in the past 25 years! I have been going to him since I was a teen when he was just starting out in business. I have followed him all over SoCal to be treated - for sports injuries, migraines, car accidents, etc. I have even referred friends with various ailments and injuries, a true compliment to his ability. He will listen and do whatever it takes to try and help find a solution to your issues. He is truly one of those great rare finds in the medical community.    Veronica D.

I've seen Dr. Poff on several occasions for painful rib that was out of alignment, and he was awesome. He has a wonderful manner with patients and his great sense of humor doesn't hurt either!    Terry H

We trust our backs (and necks) to no one else....My wife and I have been patients of Dr. P's for several years. Not only is he a phenomenal chiropractor, he is very personable. His great sense of humor and upbeat attitude will adjust your spirit while he adjusts your back.    Duncan M

"Dr. Poff has been a tremendous help with my neck problems and tendonitis in my hand.  The office environment is both calming and energizing - I walk into the office full of stress and tension that cause muscle and joint pain and I walk out feeling relaxed, loose, and energized to finish my day!

I am a professional classical guitar player/instructor and I've learned that anyone who works with their hands should see a chiropractor BEFORE they have problems so they can extend their professional life and career."    Amy H.    Huntington Beach

"Not only did Dr. Poff help me though my last trimester of pregnancy, he now works on me, my husband and occasionally our baby daughter.  I've been to several chiropractors and Dr. Poff has achieved the best results within the shortest time frame. And besides all that he's health conscious and cares about you holistically." Jackie F.

Dr. Poff,

I came to you by a really good freind who said you could help.  I took my friends' advice and it was a life changing experience.  I had NO idea that chiropractic treatment could take away my aches and pains.  Thank you so much for making my first visit a pleasant experience.  I will tell all my friends and family that chiropractic treatment does really work. Thanks again. Jackie A.  Long Beach

Dear Dr. Poff

Before receiving two neck adjustments from you I had gotten used to the stiffness and pain in my neck.  After only two visits my neck is pain-free and I have a much wider range of motion.

Thank you,   Claudia W.
